October 8, 1939 – July 12, 2010

Cleveland icon Harvey Pekar dies

Famed comic-book author found by his wife.
Monday, July 12, 2010

(Cleveland) – Famed Cleveland underground comic book writer Harvey Pekar has died at the age of 70.

Cuyahoga County Coroner’s spokesman Powell Caesar confirmed the news to WTAM 1100 Monday morning.

Pekar was found just before 1:00 am by his wife, Joyce Brabner, in their home in Cleveland Heights.

Cleveland Heights Police Capt. Michael Cannon says Pekar had been suffering from prostate cancer, asthma, high blood pressure and depression. The cause of death is not yet known.

Pekar is best known for his autobiographical “American Splendor” series. In 2003, the series inspired a critically acclaimed film adaptation of the same name in which Pekar was played by actor Paul Giamatti.

Harvey Pekar was born October 8, 1939 in Cleveland. Pekar’s friendship with Robert Crumb led to the creation of the autobiographical comic book series “American Splendor”.

The series began publishing in 1976 and chronicles Pekar’s grousing about work, money and the monotony of life.

Checking in

July 5, 2010

Hi everybody, I know I don’t post here as much as I really need to.

A lot of you may know, it’s just because I’ve so heavly bogged down with putting the webcomic series together, “High Buddies”. I occupies my time, and it’s one of those projects where I can’t really show you publicly, as I’m doing it. I will get you up to speed on it’s progress, though. I’m around number 36 in my goal of 50 strips before we launch the .com, with the first 20 that you can read on launch day. I then have pleadged to do another 50 after that.

While we’re on the subject of comics. My art for the “Henry Hemp Adventures” comic has gone to press and will be avaliable mid July. Story and cover is by Hunter Jackson (Techno Destructo of GWAR fame).

Another big news I should address is Carlito’s Madhouse Live has returned after a strange 3 month absence for the internet radio, and prank call community. June 30th it returned with Carlito and I having fun, like we never left. We hope Milkman will return soon as well, the the trifecta will be complete. We have some big plans for the future of the show so BE TUNE! I’m also think out, how to best going about relaunching my own show/podcast again, Just so you know.

ok, time to make some blackberry pie!
